What Is Name Numerology and How Is a Name Traditionally Interpreted?
2 October 2026
Name numerology is the traditional practice of converting the letters in a name into numbers and interpreting the result symbolically.
From letters to numbers
Each letter is assigned a value according to a chosen system. In the Pythagorean method the alphabet runs from one to nine and repeats. The Chaldean method uses a different table. The values are added and reduced to a single digit, and sometimes the intermediate compound number is also considered.
What is interpreted
Practitioners typically look at the name a person uses daily, the birth name, and sometimes a business name. Each number carries traditional associations, which are read alongside the birth date.
Why method matters
Because systems differ, the same name can yield different numbers. A responsible practitioner states which method they use and why, and treats the result as an interpretation to discuss, not a verdict.
A note on changes
Changing the spelling of a name is a personal decision with practical and legal consequences. Nothing in a numerological reading guarantees a particular result from doing so.
